I cannot stress enough how important it is to backup your data. I work on friends computers and I often have to erase everything and re-install windows from scratch (aka BLANK). I always ask the friend "is there anything on here you need?" They almost ALWAYS say no. Then I ask, what about pictures, music or web page Favorites! I always make a copy before I erase the drive. That's all well and good, but what if your hard drive fails? Most hard drives will fail starting in the third year, I have seen them last no more than five years. If the hard drive fails, ITS ALL GONE!! That's why you need to backup it up!!

There is an online company I use to backup my home computers. They are called Carbonite. You put a small program on your computer and it runs in the background. When you are not using your machine, (but its on) the program copies files from your machine to the on-line service (carbonite). You now have a safe copy of you data in case your hard drive fails.

Also for those of you who are computer savey, you can also download your files if you are not home but on the internet. I'm often away on business and if I need access to a file on my home machine, I log into Carbonite, find the file and download it!!
